\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b Check the flight controls to make sure they move freely and in the right direction. When you turn the yoke, your thumbs should point to the aileron in the up position, while the opposite aileron should be in the down position. Turn the yoke both ways to check each aileron. If the ailerons don't move the right way, or if it's difficult to turn the yoke, have an aviation maintenance technician inspect the controls before you fly the airplane.
\par
\par To check the elevator for proper movement, pull the yoke all the way back and make sure the elevator moves up. Then, move the yoke full forward to make sure the elevator moves down. It's a good idea to move the yoke forward then back, while turning it both left and right to make sure the control surfaces work through a full range of control movements.
\par
\par The rudder also should be checked for full travel. Press the right rudder pedal to the floor while checking to see that the rudder moves to the right. Then, push the left rudder pedal to the floor to see that the rudder moves to the left. In some airplanes, you might not be able to check the rudder during the before takeoff check since it is difficult to depress the rudder pedals unless the airplane is moving.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b Before you fly, you need to be sure your flight instruments are checked and set. The airspeed indicator should read zero. Next, check the attitude indicator to make sure it's not showing a turn and that the gyro has stabilized. You should also set the indicator so it reads straight and level.
\par
\par Set the altimeter to the current altimeter setting given by ATIS or ATC. The altimeter should indicate field elevation within 75 feet. If no altimeter setting is available, use the field elevation.
\par
\par The vertical speed indicator should read zero. If it shows a climb or descent during the runup, make a note of it so you can include the difference during any constant rate climbs or descents you might do. Then, set the heading indicator to the compass heading.
\par
\par Finally, make sure the wings in the turn coordinator are level. The inclinometer should have fluid in it, and the ball should be in the center of the tube. After checking the instruments, verify the fuel gauges show the right amount of fuel based on your preflight inspection of the quantity in the tanks.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b The runup may be the most important part of the before takeoff check. It allows you to make sure the engine is warmed up and the associated systems and instruments are operating correctly before you take off.
\par
\par First, apply power until you reach the r.p.m. setting recommended in the POH. Check the magnetos by first turning the ignition switch to the right magneto position. Make sure the power loss isn't more than the maximum r.p.m. drop shown in the POH. Turn the ignition back to BOTH and then to the left magneto position to check the r.p.m. drop. Also, check to make sure the difference in the r.p.m. drop between the magnetos isn't more than what's listed in the POH.\plain\f4\fs18 \plain\f4\fs18\b If there is no drop in r.p.m. during the magneto check, there may be a broken magneto ground wire, and you should have an aviation maintenance technician check it out.
\par
\par Next, apply carburetor heat. You should get a slight drop in r.p.m. as the heated air enriches the fuel/air mixture. Then, turn the carb heat to COLD and watch for the r.p.m. to go back to where it started.
\par
\par If you notice a large initial drop in r.p.m. with engine roughness, followed by a slight r.p.m. increase, you may have carburetor ice. This ice can form during taxi in high humidity or visible moisture.
\par
\par You also need to check the suction gauge. Make sure the indication is within the limits found in the POH. If it's not, your vacuum instruments may not be accurate. Next, check the engine instruments and ammeter. The oil pressure gauge should be in the green, but the oil temperature might not be in the normal range until after takeoff. Usually, the ammeter needle should stabilize at zero. If the ammeter shows a discharge, you may have a problem with the alternator or an excessive electrical load.
\par
\par When you've completed the runup, reduce the throttle to idle, and adjust the throttle friction lock before you go on with the rest of the checklist.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs22\cf1\b At a high altitude airport, you normally need to lean the mixture for takeoff.
\par
\par As the mixture is leaned, the r.p.m. should rise and eventually peak. When the mixture starts getting too lean and the r.p.m. decreases, enrich the mixture according to the POH to get the best power for takeoff.
\par
\par If your airplane is equipped with an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge or a fuel-flow meter, follow the POH recommendations for using these instruments to properly lean the mixture.\plain\f5\fs22\cf1\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b After you've verified all the flight controls, instruments, and systems are working properly, you should configure the airplane for takeoff.
\par
\par Your airplane may not have strobe lights, but you should turn on the landing light to increase your safety in busy terminal areas in accordance with the Operation Lights On program.
\par
\par Next, tune your radios and navigation equipment to the frequencies you are going to use, and set the dimmer control. You may have additional equipment to check, such as an autopilot and air conditioner if they are installed in your airplane.
\par
\par And, you might want to add setting the transponder to your checklist. You normally use the code 1200 for VFR flight, but at some controlled airports, you may be assigned a specific code.
\par
